Surabaya, 15 February 2015. It is part of the tradition for HARRIS Hotels to hold a photography competition prior to its opening. This time HARRIS Duo Photo Hunt was initiated by two HARRIS hotels opening soon in Surabaya, namely HARRIS Hotel & Conventions Gubeng and HARRIS Hotel & Conventions Skyline Mayjen Sungkono. The event marked its eighteenth time for photo hunt – meanwhile being the first in 2015 and first in Surabaya.

Photography being one of the key elements embodied by HARRIS Hotels (in conjunction with the hotel’s concept to bringing The Brighter Side of Life), is a powerful communication platform which allows public participation especially as encouragement to capture the beauty of nature and human interactions through the lens.

Being an “accessible” form of art, all it needs to be a good photographer is the “eye of an observer”, and a good camera to catch the discerning thread that connects the two worlds together – modernity and traditional. Both qualities are present and have become part of our hotel’s daily life.

This event is meant as reinforcement to people’s interest in the art of photography as well as appreciation towards the lure of typical Indonesian day-to-day activities.

Black-and-white photography is chosen because it requires different technical skills to take the photo, choose the object and the right lighting in order to create a breathtaking snapshot.

Featuring the theme of “The Faces of Surabaya”, each photographer is expected to explore and capture the expression of the city locals as they get on with their daily routines, along with its widely-known points of interest. To name just a few: Tugu Pahlawan (The Statue of Heroes) & Gubeng Train Station – considered as city icons and the architectural remnants of people’s struggle in achieving national independence; Pasar Burung (The Bird’s Market) located adjacent to Pasar Kembang (The Flower’s Market) is deemed as one of the busiest trade centers involving midscale traders; and last but never least, Kebun Binatang Surabaya (Surabaya Zoo) as one of the popular destinations.
